PRACE Computational Scientists

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for full-time fixed term positions as Researchers with the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. These positions will deliver the Irish contribution to the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE). As part of PRACE-2IP (and continuing in 3IP), ICHEC has a very significant involvement in Work Packages across a number of High Performance Computing (HPC) areas. These positions, funded by the EU, will be based in Dublin or Galway and are available from March 2013 to contract end date of 31st August 2013.

Job Description: These positions typically will involve working on algorithmic, library and environment development to best exploit future HPC hardware which will form the basis of future Tier-0 systems. The successful applicants will likely work on refactoring existing scientific and technical community codes in collaboration with the communities concerned. In addition individual researcher’s codes will be tuned and optimised to achieve the extreme levels of scalability required for Tier-0 access. This work will involve parallel code development using well-established techniques such as MPI but also novel methods using GPGPUs.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates should have a track record in a research and development environment, proficiency in Fortran 90 and/or C with a strong working knowledge of at least one other programming language is essential. Applicants must have an MSc or PhD in Computational Science or Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science (or equivalent). The ideal candidates would have experience in MPI programming and developing HPC applications or another parallel programming paradigm and a robust foundation in applied mathematics.

Qualifications/experience in any of the following areas would be considered advantageous:

  • Climate and/or ocean modeling & GIS (NWP techniques, Fortran and practical knowledge of software such as IFS, NEMO, ROMS, HIRLAM, COSMO etc.)
  • Materials science (DFT, MD, and/or MC techniques and practical knowledge of software such as Quantum ESPRESSO, Abinit, NAMD, VASP, etc.)
  • Computational engineering (FEM and/or CFD and practical knowledge of software such as OpenFOAM, SIMULIA’s Abaqus and/or ANSYS’ CFX/Fluent)
  • Bioinformatics (Practical knowledge of techniques e.g. sequence alignments, software packages e.g. BLAST and data formats/resources e.g. FASTA & GenBank. Experience with handling and processing high-throughput DNA sequencing datasets.

Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new products; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.

Salary Range: : €38,286 - €58,991 per annum (public sector pay policy pertaining to new entrants will apply).
