Software System Developer

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time specific purpose position as a Research Associate – Software System Developer with the Irish Centre for High End Computing (ICHEC) at the University of Galway, Ireland.

The position is funded by the European Digital Innovation Hub initiative, and available immediately to work at our Dublin or Galway office.

Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC)

ICHEC is Ireland’s national centre for High-Performance Computing (HPC) providing digital infrastructure capabilities and expertise through R&D engagements and skills development programmes to academia, industry and public sector organisations.

With a highly ambitious leading-edge Strategy for 2021-2025, ICHEC provides infrastructure services and expertise in HPC and data intelligence to develop efficient platforms, solutions and services based on technologies including AI, high performance data analytics, Earth Observation, quantum computing and cybersecurity across several sectors including environmental sciences, healthcare, agriculture, energy, financial services and ICT.

ICHEC works in close partnership with several national and international researchers, enterprises and public authorities for joint R&D, skills development, and provisioning HPC and data services to accelerate their digital transformation and green transition.

Salary: Research Associate salary scale €45,846 - €58,481 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the pay scale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The successful candidate will be an integral member of the Platform Engineering Team at ICHEC and will be involved in the design and development of backend and frontend software systems for ICHEC’s compute, data and training services. The candidate will also be encouraged to develop relevant DevOps skills.

Duties:

This is a role for a highly motivated problem-solver with motivation and skills for gathering and formally specifying user and system requirements, designing and developing solutions, and deploying them in production environments that are will be used by hundreds of national and European users.

The work and duties will entail the following aspects:

Develop data platform services on which a diverse set of data and compute workflows and applications can be developed in turn;

These platforms and services will provide a coherent and standardised set of tools and services for federating distributed data management systems across Ireland and Europe, particularly across disciplines in climate, environmental, marine renewable energy, biodiversity, agriculture, water, hydrology and life sciences;

Collaborate as a team with national and international research/industry partners on the deployment and testing of emerging hardware and software platforms;

Work in conjunction with members of the ICHEC Infrastructure Group in building, securing and operating new platforms to a high service level;

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements:

A Masters’s degree (level 8) with at least 4 years of relevant experience in a domain related

to computer science, software system development, or similar.

Experience in developing and/or deploying backend software system applications and services

with one or more of the languages or frameworks, e.g. Java, Python, Django.

Experience with software systems design and architecture, including API development and collecting and acting on stakeholder requirements.

Experience with data management, storage, database technologies, e.g. S3, PostgresSQL, MySQL.

Experience with DevOps development practices including build automation, automated testing, CI/CD, containers and container orchestration. A quality and continual improvement-focused mindset is required.

Desirable Requirements:

Experience with a common web backend development language, e.g. Python, Go, JavaScript or Java and corresponding frameworks, e.g. Django, Express, Spring Boot.

Experience with frontend web development and associated frameworks, e.g. Angular, React or similar.• Experience in using VM or containers.

Experience of working on HPC or Cloud platforms.

Exposure to Agile/PRINCE2 project management frameworks.
